Pier & Oceaan was composed on request of the "Johan Wagenaar Stichting", and was premiered during a festival called "De Elektrische Golf", as it was held in the 'Atrium' of the new Den Haag town hall in May 2000.

Without it being program-music, in some ways this work expresses my affinity with the environment of Den Haag such as harbor, dunes and sea.
The title refers to a painting by the Dutch artist Piet Mondriaan called "Pier en Oceaan no. 5, Zee en Sterrenlucht".

The used sound material was organized into five main groups, that each were subdivided into the categories Tone-attacks, Tone-fields, Noise-attacks and Noise Fields.
By using the program for musical composition "Projekt 1" by Gottfried Michael Koenig, four structures were calculated in which entry-points, pitches (in the case of Tone-attacks and Tone-fields), spatial distribution, main groups and sound-categories of the sounds are determined.

Pier & Oceaan is dedicated to my former teacher Jan Boerman, and was realized with financial support of the Fonds voor de Scheppende Toonkunst.
